Case Study: The OIFSC
About the Centre
The Ontario Industrial & Finishing Skills Centre (OIFSC) is a progressive industry owned and operated training organization with permanent facilities in Toronto, Ottawa and Ancaster.
The day-to-day operations include the delivery of apprenticeship and pre-apprenticeship training as a Ministry of Training, Colleges and Universities (MTCU) authorized Training Delivery Agent (TDA).
Training is provided for the Glazier (Architectural Glass and Metal Technician), Commercial Painter, and Industrial Painter Trades. Additionally OIFSC delivers health and safety training and skills upgrading to members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades (IUPAT) throughout the province of Ontario.OIFSC’s industry umbrella organizations are the IUPAT (the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades), the Architectural Glass & Metal Contractors Association (AGMCA), and the Ontario Painting Contractors Association (OPCA). In addition other stakeholder groups are the Ontario College of Trades (OCOT), the Ottawa and GTA Local Apprentice.
Awards
OIFSC was awarded two Glazier Pre-Apprenticeship programs for 2012, one in Toronto and one in Ottawa.Several Ottawa-area glazier apprentices participated in a charity habitat to benefit six homeless families.
Alumicor’s Involvement
For the past 4 years. Alumicor has been helping the OIFSC, by donating once a year, doors, materials, and windows that we are not using anymore, instead of scrapping them @ $0.75/lb.
“The students enjoy working on full size doors as opposed to the 24 inch models used in the past. Also former students have come in to see how the projects have changed and they think it’s great” Steve Laird, Instructor.
This is our way to give back and improve the construction industry, and being good corporate citizens.
This process benefits The OIFSC by reducing their costs, because otherwise they will have to buy them. And because the Centre uses the government grant funds, it also reduces the provincial government cost.
